The gallery is open every day of the week from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Since this art gallery is indoors, there is no wrong time of year to visit it. However, to avoid crowds, we recommend you visit the gallery on weekdays and in the morning.
The gallery is located on the Mound in the heart of Edinburgh. The Scottish National Gallery is home to a great number of masterpieces by artists from all over the world, like Raphael, Rembrandt, van Dyck, Botticelli, and many others. However, the core of its collection consists of various Scottish paintings throughout history. So, here are some of the highlights of this place:
- Several displays on Scottish paintings. You can explore the works of the best Scottish artists from the 17th to 20th centuries, like William McTaggart, Allan Ramsay, David Wilkie, Phoebe Anna Traquair, Arthur Melville, and many others.
- Italian Renaissance, 1470-1600. This exhibition presents pieces made in the Venetian Republic at the height of its power and influence. Among the works on display are paintings by Titian, Jacopo Bassano, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, and a few others.
- Dutch and Flemish Art, 1590-1700. The highlights of this exhibition include paintings by Vermeer, Rubens, van Dyck, and Rembrandt, among others.
- A Taste for Impressionism: Modern French Art from Millet to Matisse. In this exhibition, you can see the works of such legendary artists as Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Henri Matisse. The highlight of this event is the recently uncovered self-portrait of Van Gogh. Unlike other exhibitions we’ve mentioned, this event is temporary.
The gallery is located in Edinburgh’s city center, just off Princes Street. You can quickly get to it by bus, train, car, and on foot. All buses going along Princes Street go past the Scottish National Gallery. The closest railway station, Waverley Station, is about five minutes from the gallery.
