The museum is open every day except Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
It is closed on January 1st, Good Friday, May 1st, November 1st and 11th, and December 25th.
The museum is generally not too crowded, but to play it safe, we suggest that you plan your visit on weekday mornings outside of the tourist season during summer and Christmas.
The Alsatian Museum, or Musée Alsacien in the center of Strasbourg dates back to 1907 and is the place to learn about this particular French region that borders Germany and Switzerland and has developed a unique identity in the course of its history.
Occupying three traditional timber-framed buildings, the exhibition documents the life of 18th- and 19th-century Alsatians, with a focus on rural interiors. Over 5,000 items are displayed in the 30 rooms of the museum, from furniture, tools, and ceramics, to traditional costumes, toys, and religious objects.
What kinds of homes, rooms, and items are featured in the museum?
- Interiors from different parts of Alsace: a farm, a vineyard, a home typical for the Vosges Mountains area
- Craftsmen’s workshops: a smithy with a forge, a carpentry shop, pharmacist-alchemist’s workshop
- A traditional Alsatian kitchen with its pots and pans and various utensils
- Tiled stoves that don’t just make the whole place look cozy, but also demonstrate how heating used to work back in the day
- Wine barrels and winemaking equipment in the basement
- Part of the collection, dedicated to the life of Alsatian Jews
- A lovely little courtyard with a dark wooden balcony and crawling plants
The Museum’s address is 23-25 Quai Saint-Nicolas. It is easily accessible on foot or by public transport. It's not recommended to use a car in central Strasbourg, because this is the least convenient mode of transport in the old town; however, Parking Austerlitz is located 2 min walk from the museum on Rue des Bœufs.
The nearest tram stop is Porte de l'Hôpital (lines A and D), 2 min walk.
Corbeau bus stop is across the road from the museum (buses N1, N2, N3), and Ancienne Douane is across the river (buses 14 and 24).
It would take you about 20 min to walk from Strasbourg’s main railway station.
