The Museum is located at 4 Rue de Koenigshoffen in Strasbourg. It is about a 10 min walk from Strasbourg’s main railway station.
The nearest bus stop is Porte Blanche-Musée Vodou (lines 10, 4 and 2) The nearest tram station is Porte Blanche – Musée Vodou (line F).
Parc des Romains parking lot is about 5 min walk away (although we recommend walking or using public transport in the centre of Strasbourg).
The museum is open daily from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Guided tours are available every day for groups of 8 or more between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM.
Located at some walking distance from the old town and touristy areas, the museum is less likely to get crowded and noisy than some other places. However, we recommend visiting on weekdays, as soon as it opens its doors, and outside of the tourist season (summer months and Christmas period).
Château Musée Vodou, or the Voodoo Castle, is a unique private museum that hosts a collection of over 1,000 Voodoo objects from Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana, of which 220 are part of the permanent exhibition. This collection of items related to the West African religion is the largest in the world and challenges the stereotypes about Voodoo, showcasing instead its role as a system of religious beliefs, a philosophy, and a set of cultural practices drawing upon the idea of an interconnection between the visible and invisible worlds. All of the exhibits on display are authentic and have been used in religious practices: ancestor worship, medicine, divination, witchcraft, etc.
Highlights of the museum include:
- The actual building hosting the collection: the red-and-yellow octagonal neo-Romanesque water tower built in 1878, one of the first buildings to be constructed after the annexation of Alsace in 1871, in the wake of the Franco-Prussian war. Built near the Strasbourg railway station, it was used to supply steam locomotives with water
- Religious objects made from materials as diverse as wood, packaging, sticks, horns, herbs, kitchen utensils, and whatnot, comprising a truly comprehensive collection
- A Vodou garden: since various plants are used in Voodoo rituals, the museum has a garden where you can discover some of these plants and learn about their healing properties and their use as fetishes
- Temporary exhibition until October 2023 Gèlèdè Masks, the Power of the Mothers featuring traditional wooden Yoruba masks worn by the male dancers to honor the older women of the community
