Ebenezer Baptist Church: вопросы и ответы
Office hours at the church are from 10:00AM to 5:00PM, from Monday to Friday.
Services take place on Sundays, at 9:00AM in person, and at 11:00AM virtually. All services are live-streamed.
The church is a popular place and tends to get quite busy on Sundays during the sermons, so if you wish to avoid the crowds of parishioners and tourists, we suggest visiting on weekdays.
Located in the historic African American neighbourhood, Sweet Auburn, Ebenezer Baptist Church is one of the numerous Black-owned establishments in this formerly segregated part of the city. The church was founded in 1886 and moved between places until its current building was completed in 1922. The congregation grew rapidly over the years from just 13 members at the start, to over 6,000 people at present. Historically, it has played an important role for the local community, providing spiritual guidance, promoting Black business, and supporting human rights activism.
Martin Luther King Jr., the prominent leader of civil rights movement, used to be a pastor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, together with his father, from 1960 until King Jr.’s assassination in 1968. His funeral also took place at his church. Together with MLK’s birthplace, King Centre, and the activist’s tomb, it is now part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park.
Since 2005, the church’s senior pastor has been Raphael Warnock, who is also the first Black senator from the state of Georgia.
A few more facts about the church:
- The building’s restoration started in 2001, which included bringing the appearance of the sanctuary and fellowship hall to the way it looked in the historic 1960-68 period of MLK’s service
- MLK’s widow kept attending the services after the activist’s death
- Recordings of the original MLK’s sermons are played in the chapel
- Funerals of a few other important figures of the Black community took place here, including the politician John Lewis, and Rayshard Brooks who was fatally shot by a police officer
The church is located at 101 Jackson St NE, Atlanta GA 30312.
There are a few tram and bus stops on Auburn Avenue and Jackson Street nearby. King Memorial underground station is about 10 min walk away.
If you’re travelling by car, the nearest parking lot is at 80 Jackson Street.
