The opening hours of DIG change throughout the year. From October 31 to December 18, DIG is open for visitors every day from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
There isn't any bad time of the year to visit DIG since it's an indoor experience. As always, visiting on weekdays and in the morning is preferable to avoid crowds. We recommend pre-booking in advance to pick the most comfortable time slot for yourself.
DIG: An Archeological Adventure is an archaeology-themed visitor attraction in York. It was created by the same people behind the JORVIK Viking Centre. Here are some things that you can do there:
- Get hands-on archaeological experience. Both children and adults can enjoy visiting DIG since there are tours for both groups.
- Learn about York's history through archaeology. DIG lets you immerse yourself in 2000 years of York's history via tours and digging expeditions. There are four excavation pits, each dedicated to a specific stage of York's history. Explore the lives of ancient Romans, Vikings, medieval peasants, or Victorian aristocrats in a unique and fun way!
- Explore various exhibitions. DIG also hosts temporary events based around archaeology. Two current events are "Life and Death in Eboracum" and "Ancient Dust Busters." "Life and Death in Eboracum" gives you an insight into the everyday lives of the inhabitants of Eboracum (a city between the River Ouse and the River Foss). "Ancient Dust Busters" is an exhibition that tells you how we can learn more about history by studying the teeth and skeletons of the people of the past.
DIG is located in St. Saviour's Church in York's city center on St. Saviourgate Street.
You can get to it by bus without too much trouble; the nearest bus stop is Stonebow. Alternatively, walking is also a viable option as DIG isn't far from many other places of interest in York.
