Formerly a branch of the famous Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the Dutch Hermitage Amsterdam inhabits the former building of a retirement home on the bank of the river Amstel. Currently, this museum mainly features exhibitions on Dutch art; it also serves as the temporary home of the Amsterdam Museum.
Here are some of the exhibitions you can visit there:
- Love – Art, Passion & Tragedy. This exhibition features a selection of 100 portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery in London. The theme of this exhibition is love in all its forms. From paintings from the 16th century to modern photographs, you can see different depictions of love and its impact on art throughout history.
- Panorama Amsterdam: A Living History of a City. This exposition is a part of the Amsterdam Museum which temporarily resides within the Dutch Hermitage Amsterdam. The main focus of this exhibition is the city of Amsterdam: its features, stories, and changes. You can see the evolution of this magnificent city through art in this exhibition.
- Along Came Your Eyes. The author of this exhibition, Neo Matloga, uses a combination of photographs, charcoal, and ink to create unique ‘collage-paintings.’ These paintings let you see the artist’s memories of his life in South Africa; each painting is named in Matloga’s native language.
